Beauty in contrast, through form and material

The square bamboo handrail of the Wabitake Series, made with “Zumenchiku,” a traditional material from Kyoto.

The natural softness of bamboo meets geometric square forms. This distinctive character is produced by traditional bamboo-working techniques.

Unlike ordinary round bamboo, square bamboo fits comfortably and snugly in the hand.

Paired with blackened iron brackets reminiscent of samurai armor, the quiet contrast between natural material and iron adds dignified beauty to the space.

Japanese and Western, traditional and modern. Transcending those boundaries, it harmonizes naturally with a variety of spaces, from homes to shops.

A Rare Traditional Material

Tonoko (whetstone powder), a material essential to making Zumenchiku bamboo.
As its supply has become difficult, production using the methods handed down to date is expected to become increasingly limited.
The square forms created by traditional techniques, and the natural expression of the bamboo.
In each and every piece lives the value of craftsmanship passed down through the generations.
Due to the supply situation of Zumenchiku bamboo, this product will be offered in limited quantities going forward.
Beautiful even as time passes, and quietly at home in daily life—please enjoy a piece of your own.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

A. The Wabitake Series is designed for indoor use.
Because bamboo is a natural material, outdoor exposure to UV rays, wind and rain, and humidity may cause discoloration, cracking, mold, and deterioration.
For this reason, we do not recommend using it outdoors or in places exposed to rain. To enjoy the natural character of bamboo for a long time, please use it indoors.

A. For everyday care, wiping with a soft dry cloth or removing dust is sufficient.
Because bamboo is a natural material, please avoid cleaning with a heavily dampened cloth, and do not use detergents or chemicals.
If dirt is noticeable, gently wipe with a soft, tightly wrung cloth, then dry thoroughly with a dry cloth.

A. The square and pentagonal bamboo are shaped from hiratake (flat bamboo), which makes them less prone to cracking than ordinary round bamboo.
However, because bamboo is a natural material, cracks or splits may occasionally occur due to changes in temperature and humidity, dryness, or aging.

A. Blackening is a surface treatment that turns the surface of iron black through a chemical reaction.
Rather than covering the surface with a coating as paint does, it gives iron a calm black finish while preserving the iron's own texture and character.
Depending on the condition of the material, variations in shade and unevenness may appear, and the unique expression of each piece is part of what makes blackening special.
